Gilles Porret was born in 1962 in Neuchâtel. He trained at the School of Fine Arts in Geneva between 1982 and 1986. In 1993, he founded the art space "In Vitro" in Geneva, in collaboration with the artist Gianni Motti. In 1999, with Deusimar Porret, his wife, he created the new place "hall-Palermo", Geneva's apartment of the artist turned into a center of contemporary art in which many exhibitions and artists parade.
He teaches first at the Graduate School of Fine Arts in Geneva from 1995 to 1996 and then at the ECAV (Cantonal School of Art of Valais), from 1997. Since 2004, he is based in Bière where he established his workshop.
Gilles Porret keeps questioning the status of contemporary art and the role of the artist in society. His work questions color, monochrome and words. He works on the palette whose colors reign supreme in his monochromes and gradients.
